Two years ago we came up with a plan. We named it our “Two Year Plan” because we are super creative like that. The catalyst for devising this plan was our vehement hate for winter and being cold. We decided that we could survive two more winters in Massachusetts and then we would need to vacate to some place warmer. We felt that living some place warmer would allow us a higher quality of life because most of the things that we love to do are warm weather activities: gardening, hiking, golfing, biking, camping, grilling, playing kan jam, going to the beach, and just enjoying a meal (and a beer) outside. We found ourselves wishing away 9 months of our lives each year just to get to summer and life is too short to be wishing it away, or to be unhappy for the majority of each year.
As two years progressed, our plan evolved to include other ideas that would improve our quality of life. These ideas include:
- Becoming and staying debt free. No student loans, no car loans, no credit card debt, no mortgage.
- Becoming self-sufficient. Growing our own food and making things ourselves.
- Starting our own business. Working for “the man” isn’t for us. “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
Before any of these ideas could come to fruition, we needed to fulfill the original goal of getting someplace warm. We set our sights on South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and Matt began applying for jobs in those states in March of 2015. Finally, in July, Matt was offered a promotion in Pensacola and we put our plan in motion.
We are now 5 weeks and 2 days away from packing the truck and heading for Pensacola, Florida. My hope is that throughout the journey towards warmer weather, self-sufficiency, and a debt-free life, I can share our successes and failures and lots of pictures.
